Common Objectives of the Subcommittees

 

Ø      We are all interested in a better Lowell

Ø      Each organization has plans and objectives that share common themes

Ø      Working together we can support each other

Ø      We can tap into resources that would not be available to individual groups

 

Beautification:  Subcommittee Chair, Janice Pokorski

 

Ø      Beautification - investing in Lowell’s visual beauty

Ø      Partnership with Lowell the Flowering City, Lowell National Historical Park, The Revolving Museum for the Community Gardens Greenhouse

Ø      The Community Gardens Greenhouse educational site on Aiken Street

Ø      Gardening projects in the Acre and Downtown sections of Lowell

Ø      Donations to the Greenhouse project 

 

Litter Reduction:  Subcommittee Chair, Ted Davis

 

Ø      Build team of neighborhood champions

Ø      Evaluate hot spots

Ø      Clean ups

Ø      Anti-litter campaign

Ø      Need Champions and consistent efforts in each neighborhood particularly those with high index scores

Ø      Continue to evaluate with City/ neighborhood groups current trash pickups/ dumpster storage

Ø      Continue Earth Day Cleanups in April

Ø      Continue Great American Cleanup in May

Ø      Support Acre Cleanup in June

Ø      Consider with City possibility of Anti-litter “Keep Lowell Beautiful” Message

Ø      Signs in High Litter Areas

Ø      Support Western Canal stewardship Initiative with City, Lowell National Historical Park, Lowell Heritage Partnership, and Lowell Canalwaters Cleaners

 

Solid Waste Reduction:  Subcommittee Chair, Stephen Greene

 

Ø      Recycling – increase the amount recycled, get more recycling downtown, make it easier to recycle

Ø      Reuse – making it easy to reuse a good item

Ø      Source Reduction – less in the first place

Ø      Behavior change – what we can do and what we have to change in others

 

Education:  Subcommittee Chair, Frank Heslin

 

Ø      Poster contests in elementary schools

Ø      EPA grant funded an anti-littering puppet show to elementary school children at the Lincoln and Murkland Schools

Ø      Early Childhood Education students from the Greater Lowell Technical High School presented anti-littering activities to students at the Greenhaldge School.

Ø      Lowell Public School funded a KLB after school program at the Lincoln School.

Ø      Participation with Earth Day festivities

Ø      Folk Festival-KLB Winterfest parade float

Ø      Develop a Service Learning Relationship with MCC and UMASS Lowell.

Ø      Beautify a green area of public school grounds

Ø      Develop activities supporting the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks Standards to goals of Keep America Beautiful and present the activities in the History/Social Study and Science curriculums.
